Call for Submissions -- Zine!

I was born female and could not join the local Boy Scouts and the activities of the Girl Scouts didn't particularly interest me. I grew up not able to learn a lot of the things that boys learn -- I didn't know how to change a tire on my car until another transguy showed me how after an unfortunate tire-slashing incident. I never learned how to build fires. I never really had a boyhood, and now I'm trying to create a space for other people to maybe pick up skills that are "forbidden" to them because of their own gender and sex. Or maybe I'm just creating a space where something/someone can be both "rural" and "queer" or "radical" -- something that doesn't seem to happen that often. I am part of the Queer Scouts.Collapse )

Card

Does anyone know where I might find those small metal things attached to the front of card catalog boxes which held a small square of paper describing the contents of the drawer? I don’t even know what the heck that thingy would be called, or I would ask google.

I’m looking to organize my craft room and supplies. I’ve come to the conclusion that the only way to find something to best suit my needs is to make something myself. It’d probably be more fun that way too!

Back in the days when cds existed, I had my cds on a shelf in custom-sized drawers built out of plank wood that I painted and had fun cupboard handles on. It looked cool. When I needed a cd, I just slid one of the containers out and plucked it. Because I’m totally anal and controlling, I kept all my cds in alpha order by artist, so it was easy to locate something. I want to replicate that shelving/drawer system for my craft supplies but would like tags for categories like glues, paints, yarn, etc.

iPod PJ's and a purse

(x-posted to craftgrrl)

Not sure why I made this purse, except that the fabric was really cool and I love the beaded fringe. Made out of a doubled-up quilter's square from JoAnn's. :)

'Oriental' flairCollapse )
And then I made some pajamas for my iPod, because he deserves it. Made out of fleecy stuff. And a whistle, you know, just in case I have to have an impromptu rave...

Rain Pants!

Okay, so this craft isn't particularly cute or even that good-looking, but it sure comes in handy. I got sick of riding my bike in the rain and having my jeans get soaked all the way through, so I made some rain pantsCollapse )out of clear shower curtain liners I got at the dollar store. I was going to write words/lyrics on them in Sharpie, but that's the question, now isn't it? Given that this is how fat I actually am, would words make it look terrible? It's not like the pants are really fashionable or anything, but I thought that writing something on them would be kind of fun. Unless it makes me look fatter. So what do you think?

i make buttons.

And they are often faggy buttons, too.

They're 1 1/4" big. I'm using a badge-a-minit button maker, which is awful because it requires too much precision to be economically used by humans, and I happen to be a human and not a robot. If anyone has button maker recommendations, let me know.

Jewelry-making fest!

I had a lot of fun with these, except for the times when I didn't.

These are made with Memory Glass and magazine clippings (copyright infringement warning), and I think the photos turned out better than the necklaces themselves. One of them lacks a cord, but has a snazzy red bead.

This is made with random beads and a pretty polished shell. Rather straightforward, but I dig it.

This is made from a blue "earth" chime pendant and safety wire.

Kickoff Question

I'm pretty handy when it comes to textile projects, but I've got to say- I'm sort of stumped when it comes to making floor runners and area rugs for cheap. I know the basic xacto knife+carpet remnant DIY technique, but that just sounds too clunky for what I want. Do any of you have brilliant ideas or tried and true techniques for making floor coverings with fibers? Like stitched rugs with ingenious weathering tricks, non-tacky rag-rug patterns and techniques, or best of all, tricky ways to showcase vintage fabrics (my ultimate vice) in a durable, walkable floor covering?
