Know any queer rural zines? x-post (if this doesn't belong/breaks rules, sorry; tell me&I'll delete)
Sorry if this doesn't belong here, but my friend Jenna (a.k.a. trashcan_chica) needs some help:

"does anyone know of any queer zines about living in rural areas or going to rural areas?

any help/pointing in the right direction would be amazing. i went through the whole Queer Zine Archive and couldn't really find anything.

thanks!
jenna b

p.s. i just got a wordpress site, sassyfrasscircus.com!"

Her (AIM) away message also says: "is looking for zines about/by members of radical queer ANTI-URBAN communities, so if you know of any..."

So please comment if you can help at all; thanks. :]

Any suggestions for tasteful crafts that involve a pair of jeans too worn out to wear anymore?

A couple of things
I've been away sailing on a ship for awhile...but I just recently got back and started making stuff again. I'm pretty into making small journals now, and they're pretty fun ...Collapse )
When I was at sea, I also learned some sailors' fancywork, and I made this...a monkey's fist necklaceCollapse )
Thanks for looking!

Drum Roll!
I’m also finally ready to show before-and-after pics of the bathroom! I’m still not finished affixing stars to the ceiling but could be doing that for years to come given the current rate or progress. Ugh! It’s slow going. But it looks cool. This is the first time that I’ve gotten all the photos together into one folder. It’s really just not the same room at all. I can hardly even remember the old room now.

Craft Studio
As I’ve been ranting about all my various home remodeling projects, I’ve totally forgotten to post before-and-after pics of my craft studio. This room was formerly a very dark red. In fact, the before photos make the room appear much brighter than it was. It was dark and depressing. I wanted to covert the room to a brighter color and also install shelves on the wall opposite my computer equipment. This is also the first time my beloved Krishna prints have been framed and displayed. I have so much art and home décor items, I could change rooms around a hundred times and never have to buy anything but paint!

The room still needs a bit of work. The empty shelves will be populated by all of my craft and art supplies at some point soon. I want to make special boxes for that stuff. Also, I’m purposefully NOT showing the floor in the after photos. I tore up the ratty carpet in here and just have exposed pine planks. I’m not exactly sure what I’m doing with the floor yet. So, here you go!

This is what the room looked like before.

This is the new room.

Hello Craft Divas!
Can anyone think of a way and/or point me toward a machine with which one could punch holes in paper like a traditional hole punch but further into the paper than a traditional handheld hole puncher would reach? I’m thinking of making a paper stencil and hole punching a design on it. I’m stumped as to how I’m going to get perfectly sized holes punched into the paper. Any advice is appreciated!

Call for Submissions -- Zine!
I was born female and could not join the local Boy Scouts and the activities of the Girl Scouts didn't particularly interest me. I grew up not able to learn a lot of the things that boys learn -- I didn't know how to change a tire on my car until another transguy showed me how after an unfortunate tire-slashing incident. I never learned how to build fires. I never really had a boyhood, and now I'm trying to create a space for other people to maybe pick up skills that are "forbidden" to them because of their own gender and sex. Or maybe I'm just creating a space where something/someone can be both "rural" and "queer" or "radical" -- something that doesn't seem to happen that often. I am part of the Queer Scouts.Collapse )

Card
Does anyone know where I might find those small metal things attached to the front of card catalog boxes which held a small square of paper describing the contents of the drawer? I don’t even know what the heck that thingy would be called, or I would ask google.

I’m looking to organize my craft room and supplies. I’ve come to the conclusion that the only way to find something to best suit my needs is to make something myself. It’d probably be more fun that way too!

Back in the days when cds existed, I had my cds on a shelf in custom-sized drawers built out of plank wood that I painted and had fun cupboard handles on. It looked cool. When I needed a cd, I just slid one of the containers out and plucked it. Because I’m totally anal and controlling, I kept all my cds in alpha order by artist, so it was easy to locate something. I want to replicate that shelving/drawer system for my craft supplies but would like tags for categories like glues, paints, yarn, etc.

iPod PJ's and a purse
(x-posted to craftgrrl)

Not sure why I made this purse, except that the fabric was really cool and I love the beaded fringe. Made out of a doubled-up quilter's square from JoAnn's. :)

'Oriental' flairCollapse )
And then I made some pajamas for my iPod, because he deserves it. Made out of fleecy stuff. And a whistle, you know, just in case I have to have an impromptu rave...

Rain Pants!
Okay, so this craft isn't particularly cute or even that good-looking, but it sure comes in handy. I got sick of riding my bike in the rain and having my jeans get soaked all the way through, so I made some rain pantsCollapse )out of clear shower curtain liners I got at the dollar store. I was going to write words/lyrics on them in Sharpie, but that's the question, now isn't it? Given that this is how fat I actually am, would words make it look terrible? It's not like the pants are really fashionable or anything, but I thought that writing something on them would be kind of fun. Unless it makes me look fatter. So what do you think?

i make buttons.
And they are often faggy buttons, too.

They're 1 1/4" big. I'm using a badge-a-minit button maker, which is awful because it requires too much precision to be economically used by humans, and I happen to be a human and not a robot. If anyone has button maker recommendations, let me know.

Jewelry and stuff!
ADD + OCD + caffeine + unemployment=

Jewelry-making fest!

I had a lot of fun with these, except for the times when I didn't.

These are made with Memory Glass and magazine clippings (copyright infringement warning), and I think the photos turned out better than the necklaces themselves. One of them lacks a cord, but has a snazzy red bead.
Moulin Rouge picture necklacesCollapse )
This is made with random beads and a pretty polished shell. Rather straightforward, but I dig it.

This is made from a blue "earth" chime pendant and safety wire.

Call for Icons
hey faggots! This here community needs some foxy icons. Submit your icon entries in the comments.
They should have something do to with crafting, DIY, zining, and/or faggots. Like, uh, faggots in a pile of zines and fabric and power tools?
or just close ups of your best projects.
you know, whatever.

PS- Celebrate the birthday of crafty_faggot by telling people about it! You are all invited to plug it on other craft and fag communities

Kickoff Question
I'm pretty handy when it comes to textile projects, but I've got to say- I'm sort of stumped when it comes to making floor runners and area rugs for cheap. I know the basic xacto knife+carpet remnant DIY technique, but that just sounds too clunky for what I want. Do any of you have brilliant ideas or tried and true techniques for making floor coverings with fibers? Like stitched rugs with ingenious weathering tricks, non-tacky rag-rug patterns and techniques, or best of all, tricky ways to showcase vintage fabrics (my ultimate vice) in a durable, walkable floor covering?
